The Justice Department’s approval last week of the AT&T-SBC Communications and MCI-Verizon Communications mergers dealt a blow to smaller telecom companies like Qwest Communications. But for the D.C. antitrust lawyers who worked on the deals it represents the end of a gold mine. “This was a full employment act for telecom and antitrust attorneys around the country,” says William Randolph Smith, the Crowell & Moring partner who oversaw the antitrust work for SBC. For 300-lawyer Crowell, the job was the largest nonlitigation project the firm had taken on in its 26-year history. Here’s a by-the-numbers look at how the deal affected Crowell: • Peak number of Crowell attorneys working on the deal: 40

• Peak number of contract attorneys working for Crowell on the deal: 450 • Number of months working on the deal: 10 • Minimum number of pages of documents reviewed during the time (in millions): 90 • Number of pages produced for the Justice Department (in millions): 16.7
