D.C. Superior Court Senior Judge Steffen Graae passed away on Sept. 16 from heart disease. He was 64. Graae, who took senior status in July 2004 after more than two decades on the bench, is perhaps best remembered for placing the District’s beleaguered public housing agency into receivership in the mid-1990s. When the agency was returned to local control in 2000, court officials called it the most successful receivership in the city’s history. In a statement, Superior Court Chief Judge Rufus King III said Graae was known for his “keen mind, his dedication to justice, and his commitment to this community . . . but what I know we all miss most is a good and true friend.” Graae also served as presiding judge of the Superior Court’s civil division and the multi-door dispute resolution division. A memorial service is scheduled for Oct. 6 at St. Alban’s Church.
