AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION Barry Boss, managing partner at Cozen O’Connor’s D.C. office, has been elected co-chair of the ABA Criminal Justice Section Corrections and Sentencing Committee, which addresses criminal law and criminal justice. Boss concentrates his practice on complex criminal matters, focusing on white-collar crime and corporate compliance. Previously, he was vice chair of the Corrections and Sentencing Committee.
AMERICAN COLLEGE OF EMPLOYEE BENEFITS COUNSEL D.C. attorney Charles Kerby III is one of two McDermott Will & Emery partners who are among the 20 new fellows selected by the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel. The ACEBC was founded in 2000 in recognition of legal and social policy issues influencing the regulation and management of pension, retirement, group health, welfare, and disability plans. Each ACEBC nominee is required to have been engaged in employee-benefits law for at least 20 years and to have demonstrated a sustained commitment to the promotion of public awareness and understanding of benefits law. Kerby has more than 25 years of experience with ERISA and other federal and state laws concerning the design and administration of employer-sponsored benefit plans, and he provides advice on a range of issues affecting health and welfare plans.
COLLEGE OF LABOR & EMPLOYMENT LAWYERS Gary Lieber, a partner at Schmeltzer, Aptaker & Shepard, has been inducted as a fellow into the College of Labor & Employment Lawyers. Founded in 1995, the college is designed to promote achievement, advancement, and excellence in the practice of labor and employment law. It currently consists of 790 members in 42 states.
MENTAL HEALTH ASSOCIATION OF MONTGOMERY COUNTY Kim Viti Fiorentino, a partner in the Rockville, Md., office of Shulman, Rogers, Gandal, Pordy & Ecker, has been named president of the board of directors of the Mental Health Association of Montgomery County. Fiorentino has been a member of the association’s board since 2003. The association promotes mental health and wellness and supports those with mental illness by sponsoring and implementing education, advocacy, and community service programs.
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CRIMINAL DEFENSE LAWYERS Blair Brown, a partner at Zuckerman Spaeder who focuses on white-collar criminal defense, has been elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Brown has been a member of the NACDL since 1996. Founded in 1958, the NACDL is a professional bar association that seeks to advance the mission of the country’s criminal defense lawyers: to ensure justice and due process for individuals accused of criminal or other misconduct. The NACDL’s members include private criminal defense lawyers, public defenders, active military defense counsel, law professors, and judges.
WASHINGTON SMARTCEO Four partners at Williams Mullen are among the “Legal Elite” named by Washington SmartCEO magazine. Three of the honorees are in Williams Mullen’s D.C. office: James Blalock III, a member of the business section; Thomas McVey, chair of the international section; and Julian Shepard, chair of the communication practice group. Warren Lewis, chair of the franchising and distribution group in the firm’s Tysons Corner, Va., office, was also honored. Washington SmartCEO contacted thousands of attorneys and executives in greater Washington in order to nominate the top attorneys in the region based on their achievements and leadership in their fields.
