Nine days after surgery for thyroid cancer, ailing Chief Justice William Rehnquist was not on the bench when the Supreme Court convened Monday, one of several signs that his illness is more serious than first indicated. A statement from Rehnquist noted he was undergoing radiation and chemotherapy, and said he would continue to work on Court matters. Justice John Paul Stevens said that Rehnquist reserved the right to participate in cases the other justices will hear during his absence.
