San Francisco Former Seyfarth Shaw partner Michael Searshas joined the Office of Corporate Counsel at Charles Schwab & Co. As vice president, senior corporate counsel, he will provide advice and counsel on employment law issues. He is a 1991 graduate of Northwestern University School of Law. Alcohol beverage law attorney Michael Newmanhas joined Holland & Knightas a partner. Newman’s arrival represents the fourth significant addition to the firm’s alcohol beverage practice in less than a year. Newman came from Buchman & O’Brien, where he oversaw the firm’s S.F. office. He received his J.D. from Fordham University Law School in 1981. The chief counsel of the state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, Matthew Botting, has joined Buchman Law Firmas senior counsel. Botting began his career in public service with the State Compensation Insurance Fund, and from there he joined the state attorney general’s office. A native of Auckland, New Zealand, Botting received degrees in law and economics from the University of Otago. Pillsbury Winthropsenior associate Sharon O’Gradyhas been named president of the Federal Bar Association, Northern District of California chapter for 2004-05. The chapter offers both social and educational bench bar activities, including the annual luncheon for Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals judges. At Pillsbury, O’Grady focuses on complex commercial and IP litigation for biotechnology, life sciences, computer, Internet and communications and other high-tech clients. She received her J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1981. North Bay Hanson, Bridgett, Marcus, Vlahos & Rudylitigation associates Jesus Corral, Jordan Lavinsky, Hussein Saffouriand Batya Swenson, and paralegal Dan Sterkinhave received the 2003 Wiley W. Manuel Award from Legal Aid of the North Bay and the Marin County Bar Association. Corral, Saffouri, Swenson and Sterkin assisted Legal Aid with representing nearly 400 low-income seniors and families living at the Contempo Marin Mobile Home Park in San Rafael. Lavinsky worked on a domestic violence and child custody matter for Legal Aid. South Bay R. Ted Applehas joined Townsend and Townsend and Crewas a partner in its biotechnology and chemistry practice group in Palo Alto. Apple, most recently with Morrison & Foerster, works with life science companies in patent acquisition and portfolio management. Apple received his J.D. from Boalt Hall School of Law in 1996. He also holds a Ph.D. from UC-Berkeley. Steven Sinerhas joined Hoge, Fenton, Jones& Appel’s real estate group in San Jose as the firm’s leasing specialist. Siner comes to the firm after 23 years as a partner in Siner & Siner Law Corp. He is a 1972 graduate of Santa Clara University School of Law. East Bay Roberto Najerawas named Public Defender of the Year by the California Public Defenders Association. Najera, a deputy in Contra Costa County Alternate Defender Office, successfully argued Stogner v. Californiabefore the U.S. Supreme Court. The case barred prosecutors from pursuing some child abuse cases after the statute of limitations had run out. Najera is a Harvard Law School graduate. Archer Norrisin Walnut Creek has added M. Franklin Parrishas of counsel. Parrish brings his solo practice in estate planning as a new service to the firm’s clients. Parrish has maintained a practice in estate planning and trust administration for more than 25 years. He received his J.D. from Indiana University School of Law in 1975. Southern California Corporate finance specialist William Burkehas rejoined Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hamptonas a special counsel in the finance and bankruptcy group. Burke originally joined the firm in 1967 and spent 18 years practicing at Sheppard, Mullin. He joined Shearman & Sterling in 1986 and retired from that firm last year. He is a 1967 Stanford Law School graduate.
