To the new general counsel of The Paralyzed Veterans of America, Norman Cooper, the people his organization serves are more than just clients. As a decorated Vietnam veteran and an alumnus of The Citadel military academy, Cooper has a lifetime of shared experiences with them. Founded in 1946, PVA is a congressionally chartered organization that represents veterans who have spinal cord injury or disease. Cooper, 61, who is not himself disabled, says his military background has already come in handy. Despite his 25 years of experience, the GC post is no easy gig. With more than 20,000 members nationwide and relationships with a consortium of other veterans organizations, the job has many responsibilities and only six full-time lawyers to do the work. “We do employment and personnel law, we do typical contracts law, we do intellectual property,” Cooper rattles off, sounding much like a harried GC of any large corporation. There’s one key difference however. Cooper’s work aiding fellow former soldiers is much more fulfilling. Of PVA’s mission, Cooper notes: “It’s great that America’s veterans can share in all American life.”
