The New Jersey State Bar Foundation’s Nominating Committee is inviting State Bar Association members to submit their resumes for consideration for positions on the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. There are 11 trustee positions open, each serving for a one-year term beginning in June 2, 2004. The New Jersey State Bar Foundation, the charitable and educational arm of the New Jersey State Bar Association, provides a wide variety of free, law-related education services to the public. Seminars, publications and a video loan library offer information on many legal topics such as wills, landlord-tenant issues, divorce, real estate, taxes, retirement planning and health care. The Foundation’s Law and Disability Conferences on the rights of persons with disabilities, cosponsored with the Community Health Law Project and the Institute for Continuing Legal Education, have been nationally recognized. The Foundation’s Speakers Bureau fills requests for attorneys to speak to school and community groups. The Foundation is also a major sponsor of school-based law-related education programming in New Jersey. Each year, the Foundation conducts the Vincent J. Apruzzese High School Mock Trial Competition and special programs on the civil and criminal justice systems for elementary and middle school students. The State Bar Foundation also developed and presents an extensive program aimed at teaching students skills for resolving conflicts peacefully, as well as other initiatives that promote tolerance and diversity and create bully-free classrooms and schools. The Foundation publishes a newspaper, titled The Legal Eagle, for middle school students about current legal issues that impact their lives, and a newsletter, titled Respect, for high school students regarding current issues relating to tolerance and diversity. The Foundation also publishes a number of free publications including Law Points for Senior Citizens; the Consumer’s Guide to New Jersey Law; Legal Consequences of Substance Abuse; AIDS and the Law in New Jersey; the Disability Law Primer, developed by the Essex County Bar Association’s Committee on Persons with Disabilities, plus pamphlets on domestic violence laws, bankruptcy and student’s rights. Attorney candidates for the Foundation Board must be members of the New Jersey State Bar Association. Non-attorneys are also eligible to be trustees of the Foundation. All interested candidates must send a resume, and brief statement discussing why they would like to serve on the Board of Trustees, and any relevant experience they would bring to the Board. Nominations should be forwarded to Angela C. Scheck, Executive Director, New Jersey State Bar Foundation, One Constitution Square, New Brunswick, N.J. 08901-1500, no later than Thursday, April 8, 2004.
