FOLEY & LARDNER Sharie Brown, a Foley & Lardner partner in the District, has been appointed vice chair of the firm’s national compliance, counseling, and government enforcement practice group. HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN The Human Rights Campaign has honored Arnold & Porter with the National Ally of Justice Award for its significant pro bono contributions to civil rights work. The D.C.-based Human Rights Campaign is the largest lesbian and gay political organization in the United States. NATIONAL LEGAL AID AND DEFENDER ASSOCIATION Herbert Semmel, director of the federal rights project for the National Senior Citizens Law Center, has been honored with the Reginald Heber Smith Award from the National Legal Aid and Defender Association. The award “celebrates the outstanding achievements and dedicated service of an attorney for contributions made while employed by an organization providing civil legal services or public defense services.” WASHINGTON COUNCIL OF LAWYERS The Washington Council of Lawyers recognized four public interest honorees at its annual awards reception. Paula Scott, the coordinator of civil legal services at the D.C. Public Defender Service, received the President’s Award. The group said Scott was honored because her work “exemplifies the values of pro bono and public service.” Claire McGuire, counsel at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., and the Department of Transportation Pro Bono Services Committee were honored with the Government Pro Bono Award for invaluable pro bono work.
