SAN FRANCISCO Gordon & Rees has added Mark Lasser and Stephen Lawniczak as associates. Lasser previously worked for Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati. He received his J.D. from Northwestern School of Law in 1996. Lawniczak, who graduated from University of San Diego School of Law in 2000, comes to the firm from Haight, Brown & Bonesteel. Morrison & Foerster’s Charles Moll III has assumed the leadership position of the California State Bar tax section. Currently head of the firm’s property tax group, Moll practices extensively in state and local tax matters and in 2000 was counsel before the U.S. Supreme Court in Hunt-Wesson v. Franchise Tax Board. He received his J.D. from George Washington University Law School in 1979. NORTH BAY Laura Lea Allen has opened an estate planning practice in San Rafael. Previously, she was senior trial counsel at Jackson and Harrigan; she also has worked for Haight, Brown & Bonesteel and has served as deputy DA in Contra Costa County. She received her J.D. in 1995 from California Western School of Law in San Diego. Friedemann O’Brien Goldberg & Zarian has added Daniel Wheeler as an associate in Santa Rosa. Wheeler practices in the areas of banking law, real estate lending, joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, venture capital and SEC compliance matters. He earned his J.D. from New York University School of Law. EAST BAY Wendel, Rosen, Black & Dean of Oakland has added two associates. Patrick Ontiveros, who most recently was with Palo Alto’s Tomlinson Zisko, joins the firm’s business practice. He brings experience in matters involving corporate transactions, finance and securities, as well as real estate. He received his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1997. Carita Shanklin, whose experience includes a variety of CERCLA and Prop 65 environmental matters, joins the environmental practice group. She has worked at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom as well as Beveridge & Diamond in Washington, D.C. She graduated from Boalt Hall School of Law in 1997. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA Manatt, Phelps & Phillips has added six associates to its Los Angeles litigation practice. Wendy Chang’s experience focuses on all stages of defense of high-exposure liability matters. Previously with Baker, Keener & Nahra, she is a 1995 graduate of Loyola Law School. Darrel Menthe’s practice focuses on bankruptcy law, having recently served as law clerk to Judge Samuel Bufford of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court. Menthe received his J.D. from Stanford Law School. Craig Rutenberg joins the firm from Alschuler Grossman Stein & Kahan. He has experience in a variety of complex civil litigation matters including IP, trade secret litigation, unfair competition, franchise and privacy issues. He graduated from UCLA School of Law in 1999. JoAnne Sweeny joins Manatt after a clerkship for Ninth Circuit Judge Ferdinand Fernandez. She earned a J.D. from University of Southern California Law School in 2002. A former Irell & Manella associate, Joy Teitel’s practice focuses on civil litigation, including entertainment, IP and general commercial litigation. She graduated from UCLA School of Law in 2000. S. Nancy Whang is a former litigation associate at Ropers, Majeski, Kohn & Bentley. She focuses on general commercial litigation as well as banking/Uniform Commercial Code and bad faith/insurance matters. She also graduated from UCLA School of Law in 2000.
