Laterals Baker & Hostetler (Cleveland): James A. Mercadante and Steven H. Goldberg have joined as partners, resident in New York. The business transactions attorneys arrived from Morgan, Lewis & Bockius. Brown Raysman Millstein Felder & Steiner (New York): The firm’s patent department and life sciences group have added partners Daniel Hansburg and Madeline F. Baer, who will practice out of the New York office. Both were previously partners at Boston’s Ropes & Gray. Carlton Fields: Ana Cela Harris and William D. Rohrer have joined as Miami-based shareholders in the corporate, securities, taxation and asset-based financing practice group. Prior to their arrival, the pair were partners with Katz, Barron, Squitero, Faust & Boyd of Miami. Foley & Lardner: Elizabeth P. Gray, a biotechnology entrepreneur and a former U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) prosecutor, has come aboard as a senior counsel. She also previously served as a counselor to former SEC Chairman Arthur Levitt. Gardner Carton & Douglas (Chicago): William E. Corbin Jr. and Robert D. Stephan have rejoined the home office’s tax-exempt financing group as principals, having made the move from Altheimer & Gray of Chicago. Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison (New York): Joseph J. Simons, former director of the Federal Trade Commission’s bureau of competition, has joined as a partner and co-chairman of the firm’s antitrust practice, resident in Washington. He has handled antitrust matters in the telecommunications, pharmaceutical and defense areas. Thompson & Knight (Dallas): Jeff Boyd, former Texas deputy attorney general for civil litigation, has returned to the firm’s trial and government relations practice as a partner in the Austin, Texas, office. Torys (New York), an American-Canadian business law firm, has added partners Louis S. Ederer and Joseph J. Vicinanza to its New York roster, accompanied by associates Sophie Anger, Elisheva Jasie and John Maltbie. Venable (Baltimore): The firm’s Washington office has added Ted Ramirez and Mark Velasco to its staff as practitioners in the health care and business transactions practice groups. Ramirez, who represents major hospital systems and religious sponsors, and former CompuServe Network Services general counsel Velasco both arrive from now-defunct Arter & Hadden. Winston & Strawn (Chicago): Christine Edwards, formerly executive vice president and chief legal officer of Bank One Corp., will become a partner of the firm. Her practice will focus on the financial services markets, as well as corporate governance and public and regulatory policy issues. New Partners Allen Matkins Leck Gamble & Mallory (Los Angeles): The firm has elevated five of its attorneys to partner in four of its California offices: Deborah L. Babb (Los Angeles); Jan S. Driscoll and Allen B. Walburn (San Diego); Sandra A. Jacobson (Orange County) and Todd E. Whitman (Century City). Loeb & Loeb has elected three new partners: Christian D. Carbone and Jacques M. Rimokh (litigation practitioners in Los Angeles) and Paul W.A. Severin (corporate and securities law, based in New York). Firm Management Baker & McKenzie: The Miami office committee has announced a new management team. Eugene A. Rostov, head of the international practice group, is the new managing partner and Roy J. Larson, who leads the corporate practice, was named financial partner. Former managing partner Donald J. Hayden will also be a member of the team. Appointed Celia Bobrowsky has been appointed to the board of directors of Legal Aid and Defender Association, one of the nation’s largest providers of legal services to the indigent. Based in Michigan, Bobrowsky is also the director of community relations for the Detroit Tigers baseball team. Lawrence W. Newman and Robert B. Davidson, partners with Baker & McKenzie’s global dispute resolution practice group, have assumed the positions of chairman of the international commercial dispute resolution committee (Newman) and chairman of the arbitration committee (Davidson) of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. Rodolfo Pittaluga Jr., a creditors’ rights specialist and a shareholder in the Miami office of Akerman Senterfitt, has been appointed to the board of directors of the Latino Turnaround and Insolvency Network, a nationwide group seeking to increase the involvement and visibility of Hispanic turnaround and insolvency bankruptcy professionals. Honored Ann M. Murphy, managing partner of Milwaukee-based Quarles & Brady’s home office, has received the “Lawyer of the Year” award, bestowed upon her by the Milwaukee Bar Association for her contributions to the profession. Her practice focuses on commercial lending and public finance. New Office Duane Morris (Philadelphia) has established a new office in Pittsburgh, to be manned by the following partners: George M. Medved, James P. Hollihan and David A. Scotti (from Pepper Hamilton) and A. Bruce Bowden, formerly of Buchanan Ingersoll.
