Gov. Gray Davis handed gavels Wednesday to a longtime Oakland court commissioner and a veteran Alameda County prosecutor. Davis promoted Commissioner Beverly Daniels-Greenberg to Alameda County Superior Court, and tapped Deputy DA Nancy Davis for Contra Costa County Superior Court. Daniels-Greenberg was out of the office Wednesday attending an appointment ceremony. A judge who’s known the commissioner for many years praised the governor’s choice. “I am just delighted,” said Superior Court Judge Allan Hymer, who worked with Daniels-Greenberg in the public defender’s office before the two joined the bench. Daniels-Greenberg, 58, was a deputy PD for 15 years before becoming a court commissioner in 1997. Most recently she has handled misdemeanor arraignments at the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse in Oakland. She received positive reviews in last year’s Alameda County Bar Association survey of the local bench. She is married to Assistant Public Defender Donald Greenberg. She had a varied career before becoming a lawyer, working as a bank teller, flight attendant and college instructor. As early as 1999, Daniels-Greenberg was rumored to be in line for a judgeship, but no appointment materialized until this week. “It has been a long time in coming,” Hymer said. Hymer, who supervises the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse, didn’t know what the new judge’s assignment would be. Daniels-Greenberg will fill the position left vacant by Kenneth Norman, who died in November 2002. Like Daniels-Greenberg, Norman was an African-American jurist who worked as a court commissioner and public defender before becoming a judge. Oakland court watchers also celebrated prosecutor Nancy Davis’ appointment to the Contra Costa County bench. “It’s a wonderful appointment,” said District Attorney Thomas Orloff. “She’s a talented lawyer and a good addition to the Contra Costa bench. I will be sorry to lose her.” Davis said she’s eager to get started. “It’s something that I really aspired to and I hoped that I could get,” she said. Davis, a 45-year-old Alamo resident, currently heads the DA office’s sexually violent predator unit. During her 21-year career as a prosecutor she has worked in the family support division and supervised felony staff at the DA’s Berkeley branch office. Davis’ family has a long history in the prosecutor’s office. She is married to another prosecutor, Senior Trial Deputy Jeffrey Stark. Her mother, Amelia, was a telephone operator and Spanish interpreter for the DA’s office for many years before retiring in 2002. Amelia Davis was “everyone’s second mom,” DA Orloff said. “I remember seeing [Nancy Davis] around here when she was a kid.” Davis replaces Judge Douglas Cunningham who retired this year. Both women will earn $139,476 annually.
