EMPLOYMENT a graduate assistant who was sexually harassed by her professor, first on an overseas trip and then back on campus, was awarded $3 million by an Iowa jury on June 20. Iowa State University graduate assistant Julie McElroy went on a school trip to Moscow. She claimed that Lynn Glass, the professor for whom she worked, made advances to her there. She made a sexual harassment complaint to the university, which instructed Glass to have no contact with her. She then filed a formal complaint with the university’s affirmative action office, which brought charges against Glass, but dropped them after learning that he had terminal cancer. McElroy then sued the university, claiming that Glass harassed her on the trip and was allowed to remain on campus and continue to harass her. McElroy v. State of Iowa, No. CL74459 (Polk Co., Iowa, Dist. Ct.). PLAINTIFF’S ATTORNEYS: Paige Fiedler, Fiedler & Townsend, Johnston, Iowa; Roxanne Conlin, Roxanne B. Conlin and Associates, Des Moines, Iowa DEFENSE ATTORNEY: George Carroll, assistant attorney general, Des Moines
