Justice Scalia Was Off Base In Attacking Bar in Lawrence To the editor: I have just had the opportunity to read Justice Antonin Scalia’s dissent in Lawrence v. Texas[" Final Stretch Nets Blockbusters and More," June 30, 2003, Page 9]. While I disagree with the outcome of the opinion, for the most part, the dissent withstands the rigors of close logical reasoning that characterizes most Court opinions. That said, I find it regrettable that a portion of the dissent criticizes the majority’s decision as a product of “the law profession culture, that has largely signed on to the so-called homosexual agenda.” This is an utterly unsupported ad hominem attack on the bar that is unworthy of a Supreme Court justice. As a former law clerk to a federal judge, I have some experience in researching and drafting legal opinions on constitutional issues. Frankly, I have never seen an argument, in opinions of the Supreme Court or the lower federal courts, that is quite this specious, let alone constitutionally irrelevant. I think the law reviews are going to have a field day with it, and well they should. William L. Martin Washington, D.C.
