MEDICAL MALPRACTICE the estate of an 82-year-old woman reached a global settlement for $2 million on March 20 in a suit brought under Arizona’s Vulnerable Adult Statute. The estate of Josephine Bell sued an internal medicine specialist, Yuma Regional Medical Center (YRMC) and its transitional care unit after Bell died from complications from bedsores. Bell’s estate alleged that her treatment by YRMC and Dr. Robert W. Nutt fell below the standard of care by allowing her to develop bedsores. Bell’s estate sought $1 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitives. Estate of Bell v. Yuma Regional Medical Center, No. S1400CV 2002 00472 (Yuma Co., Ariz., Super. Ct.).
