Peggy Banczak has just received a windfall: She’s been named general counsel of Austin-based Cielo Wind Power. Cielo (Spanish for “sky”) is the largest wind power developer in the Southwest. It has three Texas-based offices, six wind ranches and farms scattered throughout the Southwest, and partnerships with seven Texas energy providers. The company plans wind power projects and makes turbines, generators, and other equipment. Though Banczak, 52, who graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School, never formally studied energy law, she’s been at energy companies her entire career. “I think my career has been molded more by fate than by choice,” she laughs. She started at the Texas Oil & Gas Corp. right out of law school and since has worked for oil, gas, and power companies, holding the position of general counsel of Enserch Corp., and putting in a three-year stint at Enron Corporation-on whose recent troubles Banczak de-clines to comment. She says she values the international experience gained from working for an energy giant. But she jumped at the chance to work at Cielo for its change of scope and pace. “At a large corporation, there’s a consensus-decision-making [process],” she says. “‘Small firm’ [work] is much more exciting, much more dynamic.”
