Two partners, five associates and three paralegals from the soon-to-be-defunct Lyon & Lyon’s Los Angeles headquarters have found a new home at Perkins Coie’s L.A. office. Longtime partners Kenneth Ohriner and Michael Wise joined Perkins as partners Wednesday. Wise said he was attracted to Perkins’ full-service intellectual property practice, which he said acts as “an IP boutique within the firm itself.” Wise said Perkins also does a significant amount of work with start-up companies in Los Angeles so it is “a natural fit” to bring his start-up clients to the firm. With the Lyon & Lyon group, Seattle-based Perkins Coie now has 37 attorneys in its Los Angeles office. Lyon & Lyon announced earlier this month that it would be going out of business Aug. 31. The IP firm lost a number of partners over the last two years and faced greater competition from general practice firms for big-ticket litigation work. When Lyon & Lyon’s merger discussions with Townsend and Townsend and Crew fell through, partners decided to close down the firm. At that time, Lyon & Lyon had approximately 36 attorneys in Los Angeles, 24 in Irvine, eight in San Diego, nine in San Jose and three in Washington, D.C. Proskauer Rose had earlier acquired attorneys in Lyon & Lyon’s New York office. In announcing the firm’s closing, Lyon & Lyon said its Irvine and San Diego offices were pursuing a merger with another firm. Lyon & Lyon partner John McConaghy said Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe was one of the firms that had spoken to the Irvine office. Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati also has reportedly talked to the group.
