T his week, Citicorp and two architects took their bitter battle over a failed 1980s Old Oakland development deal and an ensuing $42 million jury verdict before the 1st District Court of Appeal.

The justices questioned — sometimes pointedly — whether the bank was reasonable when it yanked financial backing from the project and whether the developers’ plan was financially viable.

“It could be plausible that no other lender would have given you money,” Justice Mark Simons mused as he questioned the developers’ attorney, Elliot Bien.
