New families are transforming Oakland, but the people in Grisby’s area are still trying to uproot blight in their neighborhood. This month, there is one fewer dilapidated rental unit than there used to be. In part, Grisby says, that’s because Deputy City Attorney Charles Vose has been keeping watch.

“We have a city attorney assigned to our area,” he said. That person “deals with any of the complaints that we have,” and shares them with other city departments. Vose also attends neighborhood meetings.
