SAN FRANCISCO — Bolstering the duty of loyalty that lawyers owe former clients, the California Supreme Court today ruled against a lawyer who took a public position against an ex-client’s hotel development project.
The unanimous court didn’t articulate a broad new rule about the duty of loyalty, and tried to tamp down worries about what the decision could mean for law firms’ disqualification rules and lawyers’ freedom of speech.
