An agreement between New York Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman and his counterpart on the Supreme Court of New South Wales in Australia will allow judges to exchange analyses of each other’s statutes.

Lippman said that the memorandum of understanding signed yesterday will give the New York State Court of Appeals greater insight into the meaning of New South Wales statutes and, perhaps more importantly, the Supreme Court of New South Wales better guidance about New York state statutes that are frequently invoked before foreign courts, particularly in contract law cases.
