Several law firms have been victimized by a con artist claiming to have found a package addressed to them from the New York State Insurance Fund, the state warned Wednesday (pdf).
About two dozen firms in the last month have been contacted in the hoax, where the scammer claims to have found the package on the subway. The caller, who often goes by “Jimmy” and says he is from out-of-state, offers to deliver the package to the firm. The package, despite its weight, has turned out to be only multiple identical copies of a NYSIF certificate of insurance.
