Scarce Bright Spots for Large Calif. Firms in 2009

It was a generally gloomy 2009 for big firms operating in California. Seventeen of those on The Recorder 's annual list of the state's 25 largest firms reported lower year-over-year gross revenues. But there were bright spots. Gross revenue and revenue-per-lawyer were both up 10 percent at Irell & Manella, and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher logged its 13th consecutive year of record profitability. With the worst of the slump receding in the rear-view mirror, firm leaders are looking at 2010 with new hope.
