Federal judges received more than 400,000 online applications for 1,244 clerk positions in the 12 months ending Sept. 30, a two-thirds increase over the previous year, says the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. The average number of applications sent by each applicant has also increased, to 37 in fiscal year 2009 compared with 32 in 2008 and 19 in 2005. And for the first time, a majority of users of the online application system were law school graduates, compared with students in their final year.
