And he had a cousin from Georgia to thank for it all. Smith helped his cousin, Norman Carpenter, file a 2007 federal suit against Mohawk Industries for wrongful termination and witness tampering. The litigation raised a significant privilege issue, which led to Smith's trip to the high court and a ruling in Carpenter's favor.
