Japanese prosecutors will ask a court not to try a gangster under the lay judge system on fears of possible reprisal against citizen judges, prosecution sources said Friday. Such a request is believed to be the first since Japan introduced its lay judge system in May. The request follows the indictment Friday of Kazuya Ito, 39, a senior member of a gang group affiliated with the crime syndicate Yamaguchi-gumi, for killing a rival gangster last year.
