Attorney General Eric Holder Jr.'s motion to dismiss the case with prejudice -- five months after Ted Stevens was convicted of public corruption charges -- marked the end of a case fraught with problems. More than just an embarrassment for the Justice Department's Public Integrity Section, it presupposes a shake-up in the section's leadership and invites a new era of heightened scrutiny from judges, defense lawyers say. The case also gives prosecutors new impetus to err on the side of disclosure.
