Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom is offering its incoming associate class the chance to defer their start date until the fall of 2010 with pay (although only one-third of their salary) through its "Sidebar" program, which allows attorneys to work outside the firm for up to one year. In light of the "current economic climate," Skadden "decided to take this creative 'win-win' approach," said Skadden's executive partner-elect Eric Friedman in a statement. At this point the program is strictly voluntary.

According to a memo by Skadden executive partner Robert Sheehan obtained by The Am Law Daily, the Sidebar program “allows attorneys to take extended time from the firm to pursue personal interests while maintaining a connection to the firm.”
