For some reason, when summer associates ask us Current Cogs about life at Big Law, we can’t help but toe the party line. Before we realize it is happening, our mouths open and a series of sentences roll off our tongues that are identical to what we were told as summers — without any modifications for the realities we now fully comprehend.

It’s not like we outright lie. We just highlight the positive and repackage the negative. As far as I know, Cogs are not sent to some seminar where we are hypnotized to repeat certain mantras: “Partnership is an attainable goal. Billing is fun. The work is interesting. I love the people here.” Of course, I could have been subjected to some sort of brain washing without my consent.
