A number of attorneys -- some concerned about job security prompted by widely reported job losses -- are stepping away from law firms and into alternative careers. While clerking for a federal judge in the Eastern District of New York, Spencer Baretz was enthralled with the media circus surrounding high-profile cases and decided to launch his own communications consulting firm specializing in law firm marketing. "I really enjoyed the law, but until your fifth or sixth year you are a paper pusher," he says.
