When the University of Southern California Gould School of Law appointed Franita Tolson as interim dean, she became the first Black dean in the law school’s 123-year history and the first woman dean in more than 40 years.

Tolson, the George T. and Harriet E. Pfleger Chair in Law, became co-dean in April, serving with Andrew T. Guzman, who was promoted to USC’s provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, beating out more than 70 candidates for the position.
