The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s enforcement director ruffled feathers recently when he delivered a stark message to an audience of white-collar defense lawyers: You are needlessly delaying cases.

Gurbir Grewal said defense lawyers are contributing to an erosion of public trust in the markets and in government by, in some cases, making it difficult for the SEC to quickly pursue accountability for corporate misconduct.
