The Senate has confirmed Candace Jackson-Akiwumi to a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, making her the sole non-white person and former public defender to currently sit on that court.

Jackson-Akiwumi, a partner with litigation boutique Zuckerman Spaeder, spent a decade serving as a federal public defender in the Northern District of Illinois. She was confirmed to the circuit court Thursday with a 53-40 vote.
