It's not my habit to defend John Ashcroft. But lately, I've almost been tempted (emphasize almost). The attorney general has been blasted for a memo sent out in late July that calls for U.S. attorneys to report to the Justice Department all criminal cases in which federal trial judges impose less stringent sentences "over the objection of the Government." Some see this as a witch hunt for judges, with Ashcroft is leading the charge. In fact, neither of those two claims is totally true.

ATLANTA AP - The personal doctor of a pro wrestler who killed his wife and son before committing suicide was charged Monday with improperly dispensing painkillers and other drugs to other patients.The seven-count indictment said Dr. Phil Astin, physician to wrestler Chris Benoit, dispensed drugs including Percocet, Xanax, Lorcet and Vicoprofen between April 2004 and September 2005.

Three Florida attorneys have opened a new front in the legal wars against the tobacco industry. Adopting many of the same legal arguments used in lawsuits against cigarette makers, they filed a proposed class action lawsuit Tuesday in Miami against the makers of smokeless tobacco products. According to observers, the case is the first such proposed class action anywhere against the makers of smokeless products.
