The Recession's Not Over for China's Law Firms
On the eve of the Oct. 1 national holiday marking the 60th birthday of the People's Republic of China, associates at one of the nation's largest law firms got some welcome news. Jun He Law Offices announced that it was rolling back cost-saving measures introduced in April. But Jun He partner Kirk Tong warns that China's recovery -- at least as it applies to law firms -- shouldn't be overstated. "It's getting somewhat better," he notes, "but it's still not at the level it was before."Firms show modest growth in new partners
More lawyers made partner at top law firms this year, with many shops bolstering their ranks by more than 25%. Overall, new partner classes in 19 of the nation�s biggest firms grew by 4.6% this year, compared with 2005.U.S. District Judge Sue Robinson in Delaware has once again punished the chip designer Rambus for shredding documents back in 1998 and 1999, shortly before it declared a patent war against much of the semiconductor industry.

But according to plaintiffs lawyers at Lieff Cabraser, Berger & Montague, and Grant & Eisenhofer, employees at the companies were the victims of a conspiracy to suppress their salaries and keep them tied down at their jobs. And on Wednesday, a judge in San Jose ruled that the lawyers had come up with enough evidence to allow their case to move forward.
