Andrew Mackey has had a stormy relationship with his defense counsel — so much so that at one point he punched his trial lawyer in front of the jury.

Mackey argues in his habeas corpus case that his lawyer, veteran San Francisco defender Joseph O’Sullivan, told him to stage the punching to get a mistrial, a contention O’Sullivan has called “laughable.”
