SAN FRANCISCO — Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton partner James Gilliland died Thursday after being shot on his porch in El Cerrito, according to news reports.

Police said Gilliland had just returned from a social engagement when someone confronted him and fatally shot him, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. It is unclear whether Gilliland knew his killer.
