Government contracts work is a practice typically handled some 3,000 miles away from the Bay Area deep in the nation’s capital. But for Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton, the idea of tying that work to the tech industry’s stab at creating products with military applications was one the firm felt was worth exploring.

To that end it brought on former client Brian Sweeney earlier this summer from his role as general counsel of Aerojet Rocketdyne. Sweeney, who works mainly out of his home in Sacramento, has an office in San Francisco and intends to represent Bay Area clients looking to navigate the sometimes extensive requirements that come with being a government contractor or doing even small amounts of work with the government.
