SAN JOSE — Attorneys for Hewlett-Packard and Oracle Corp. brought their long-simmering contract feud in front of a jury for the first time on Tuesday, setting the stage for a weeks-long trial with more than $3 billion at stake.

In a packed courtroom presided over by Santa Clara Superior Court Judge Peter Kirwan, the two sides outlined their competing narratives to a jury of three men and nine women. They also had to walk through a complicated timeline of events, while introducing the technology that underlies the dispute.
