Complex technology transactions are hardly anything new for Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. Still, the deal it handled for defensive patent aggregator RPX Corp. in the fall of 2014 stands apart.

Among the players were Apple, Microsoft, Ericsson, BlackBerry, Sony and their Rockstar consortium. That was just one side of the deal. On the other were Google Inc., Cisco Systems Inc., HTC Corp. and about 30 other tech companies looking for a cease-fire over 4,000 of the patents Rockstar acquired in the Nortel Networks Corp. bankruptcy.
