SAN FRANCISCO — Depending on how you look at it, Shannon Liss-Riordan is either fighting for the little guy in the brave new world of the gig economy or shaking down Silicon Valley’s mold-breaking startups to enrich herself.

The Boston-based attorney at Lichten & Liss-Riordan has launched a wave of suits against firms like Uber Technologies Inc. and Lyft Inc., arguing that they owe their drivers a minimum wage and benefits. Her efforts have been made in parallel—but not always in harmony—with those of labor unions like the Teamsters.
