Litigation wins take many forms. There are quick conquests and hard-fought victories after the crucible of trial. There are the death-by-a-million-cuts cases and appellate turnarounds that take a strong spine when things look bleak. There are triumphs accomplished against the odds, against bad facts, against a well-armed opponent. There are losses too. And though you won’t see much failure in the following pages, it’s the risk of litigation that makes victory, however it comes, such a sweet prize.

In this issue, we spotlight standout litigation departments based on outcomes in client matters in the 2015 calendar year. To determine our winners, Recorder editors reviewed 148 nominations from more than 60 law firms detailing litigation engagements led by California lawyers. Some disputes involved 10-figure recoveries. Others imperiled a product line, a way of doing business or the entire company. We looked for results that showed creativity, craft and gumption. High stakes trial wins mattered most.
