Pressing “play” got a little more expensive in California.

In June 2015, lawyers at Sidley Austin negotiated a sizeable settlement for the recording industry in its fight with satellite radio service Sirius XM. The record labels went to court over Sirius radio’s live-streaming of songs recorded before 1972. That music isn’t subject to U.S. copyright law, but the record labels argued it should be subject to California law dealing with public performance rights.
