Just in time for the holidays, Samsung Electronics Co. has promised to pay Apple Inc. the $548 million judgment stemming from its 2012 smartphone “trial of the century.” But there are no glad tidings emanating from either company.

In a filing Thursday with U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh of the Northern District of California, Samsung stated that it has “made arrangements to complete payment to Apple” by Dec. 14. On the surface that would appear to put a final stamp on a big chunk of the original iCourt trial.
