SAN FRANCISCO — Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher has joined the growing list of outside law firms hired by Uber Technologies Inc. to fend off litigation in San Francisco courts.

Gibson Dunn will defend the transportation network company against claims made by a Delhi woman who says she was raped by an Uber driver while using the app. The woman’s attorneys at Yuhl Carr and Wigdor sued Uber in January for negligence and fraud in the Northern District of California, claiming that stronger driver background checks could have prevented her attack.
