The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in February released the official Framework for Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity, following an executive order from President Obama issued one year ago.

Pursuant to Executive Order 13636, the framework is to be used by agencies as the basis for reviewing critical infrastructure cybersecurity within regulated sectors and to guide organizations in creating cybersecurity frameworks that prevent cyber incidents, such as the recent retailers’ breaches that occurred in late 2013. The framework appears to be an attempt by the federal government to protect individual privacy and civil liberties while allowing more standardized sharing of information. It informs businesses of the importance of protecting against cybersecurity risks and offers a flexible, risk-based approach that allows but does not require various industries to adopt the standards. The document is certainly a step in the right direction toward meeting these goals.
