Oct. 11 is National Coming Out Day, an internationally celebrated day established to mark the 1987 March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, attended by a half-million people. This march was held to give voice to the human cost of denying millions their full civil rights because of sexual orientation. It also served to break the culture of silence that had been a harmful byproduct of the discrimination lesbians and gay men had faced.

Oct. 11 also is the International Day of the Girl, created in 2011 by the United Nations to address the worldwide discrimination and violence girls experience every day, give voice to girls’ aspirations, and promote their empowerment and full human rights.
