SACRAMENTO — Ann Ravel, a former deputy in the U.S. Department of Justice, appears headed back to Washington, D.C., after President Barack Obama on Friday nominated her to the Federal Election Commission.

Ravel, who served as Santa Clara County’s top lawyer for 11 years and now chairs the state’s Fair Political Practices Commission, would replace Cynthia Bauerly, a Democrat who resigned from the FEC earlier this year.
