California’s anti-SLAPP statute has protected everyone from news media to consumer groups to Internet posters from unfounded lawsuits. But a growing number of appellate courts are refusing to extend it to one particular group: lawyers accused of misconduct.

The Fifth District Court of Appeal was the latest to join the trend Wednesday, ruling that the SLAPP defense is not available to a Fresno attorney who is accused of selling out a client to spite his former law partner.
