United Parcel Service Inc. will forfeit $40 million to avoid prosecution for transporting controlled substances and prescription drugs for illegal Internet pharmacies, U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag announced Friday.

Between 2003 and 2010, UPS knowingly shipped pharmaceuticals for companies that, in some cases, only required customers to fill out an online questionnaire to receive a prescription, prosecutors said. At least one drug task force and various employees warned company officials that UPS was moving drugs for questionable pharmacies, according to an agreed statement of facts provided by the U.S. attorney’s office.
