SAN FRANCISCO — Law firm leaders talk about the tectonic changes reshaping the legal job market, but when it comes to summer associate programs, surprisingly little has changed.

While many firms reacted to the economic malaise by sharply shrinking their summer programs, San Francisco-based Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman and Chicago’s Seyfarth Shaw have done that and more: The firms are exploring more targeted skills-based methods of training for soon-to-be lawyers. And they’re bypassing the lengthy law school recruiting process while they’re at it.
